My thoughts exactly. I mean had the rock and sand all been from a mature tank I could understand maybe adding fish so early, but definitely not with all base rock and new sand.

You used new sw,dry base rock and new sand right?

I'd run the line from some sort of reservoir fed by the unit rather than straight from unit to tank. The first few seconds your unit kicks on trash water is pushed through the good water line. If its a used pump just unscrew the impeller housing and clean the impeller, always works for me!
