Re: First post, first tank

The anemone looks like it is doing really well. What are you feeding it and how often?

Re: Nitrate and Mg+ testing kits

The main ones I've used are Salifert, Elos, Seachem, Aquarium Systems (FasTest), and API. For Mg++, Elos and Salifert were in agreement or were minimally different. NO3- was about the same on these two--aka pink and hard to read, but with higher resolution and smaller gradations. The other kits aren...

Re: First post, first tank

Careful mixing the anemones. You'll find that the first species you got, Heteractis crispa, gets very, very large by comparison. It will grow to take up a good chunk of your system, in fact. Mine took up about half the length of my old 75g (which was a standard 48").

Virtual Server?

Okay, so I have a few older machines (laptops) lying around that I'd like to sorta breathe new life into. Even with a clean install, these things are somewhat slow. I want to setup a VMWare based server and operate them remotely on each respective device (each device with its own VM). So, what route...

Re: key west sand

Is it dried or live? If live, is it in running water and how old is it? I will need more for my seagrass system, so if it is live, I my be interested.

Re: Starting over!!

Well, if I had the cash and time, I'd probably prefer to start over with new materials. There's going to be a lot of organics and other nutrients/metabolites that have built up and soaked into the older rock and sand. Using them again could be a recipe for more filamentous green algae. Did you do an...

Re: Need input co2 leak

How is yours constructed? Some recommend teflon tape, but I don't. Bits of it can get caught in the regulator and cause it to fail. Check the gauge and see if it has a gasket/washer or something similar. It may need to be replaced if it uses one.

Re: Can't keep snails alive

While your alkalinity is still barely acceptable, it wouldn't hurt to raise it a bit, which can be done with some washing soda (done by literally baking a bit of baking soda in the oven for a while). Use this calculator to find out how much you need: http://reef.diesyst.com/flashcalc/flashcalc.html ...

No problems with other forums, etc. We typically welcome it. This is the first I've seen of BayouReefKeeping. I'm a member on the LARC forums, though.

Welcome to the forums! Sorry for the late greeting.

There are a few stores around the area. Take a quick look in our two Vendors subforum to see a few in the general area (in addition to others elsewhere).

Re: Restarting my seagrass build

Updates! Okay, updated pics. This is after a hefty water change, some trimming of leaves (I didn't remove any rhizomes this time) and a die-off on the right side. Makes it look more sparse, but not bad, IMHO: http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z107/Amphiprion_photos/DSC00043.jpg http://i188.photobuc...

Re: RO Membranes

How much water have you made, roughly, and what kind of prefilters are you using? How often are you changing those prefilters? I use the same Dow Filmtec membrane as you and I'm able to have one last for at least a few years. That doesn't mean much now, since I make very little water by comparison, ...

I hadn't heard about the fate of the phonebooth tank. That's sad and shows what their company is primarily interested in.

Re: Restarting my seagrass build

I'd snap a new one, but the tank is in a blackout to stall the cyanobacteria. The Halophila in one part of the bed reached its life expectancy, so to speak. Individual rhizomes only live so long and this one was older than most at about 8 months. It will grow back, but it creates a sludge of a mess ...

Re: Restarting my seagrass build

Well, a little update with good news. It seems that despite the fact that I've been neglecting the tank, I officially have a new Thalassia plantlet as of a few days ago. It sprouted right next to the other two, giving me a whopping total of three. Man, these things are slow. The leaf growth for me i...
