When a macro algea dies, can it poison your tank?
I had some turtle grass die off in my tank. I woke to find the tank, green so I did a 20% water change immediately. Afterwards however my nitrates were 40 ppm. which is high for a right after water change reading. I expect the dieing maiden's hair infused my tank with alot of nitrates and I hope not...

Water changes
As a new aquarium keeper, I am not quite certain about water changes. The frequency and the percentage of water you need to remove is a mystery to me. Is there a general rule of thumb and does it make a difference in what you’re keeping?

Live Rock
I bought all my live rock from Fat Fish in Daphne. They have some really nice and very cured pieces there and I know it seems a bit pricey compared to online vendors but you're not paying money for shipping and you can hand select your rock as you go. Plus Michelle is really kind about giving discou...

I read your post. I really did
And I agree and have already raised the tank temp to boost the fishies immune responses. Plus it'll make him feel better. This morning the bad dots were all gone but I know they are lurking to jump on him again so as stated before and since you think it is a good idea I will let my local Fishie stor...

Thanks for your input. A blue devil is a saphire damsel or blue damsel. Last night I lost about 5 hermits as well. The dottie is again showing no signs of stress and the little salt size granuals are all but gone. The nitrates were .20 before the water change and have stayed the course sense it. No ...

My Dottie was doing fine
ack, my tank has been cycling for a few weeks now. I added a dottieback about 8 days ago and all has been fine, he nibbled a bit on the blue devils fins but a-ok. I noted a few days ago that I had a little white thing creep out from the live rock. I wasn't able to get a picture but I wanted to submi...

Lighting benefits
I have a new tank set and I believe it is at the end of cycling. I only had a small outbreak of diatoms-light dusting and actually still have it but by far this is not a nuisance. I was wondering however if inferior lighting might be the cause of this algea hanging about. I was under the impression ...
