Re: NEW TO HOBBY

Generally make sure the sump is large enough to to fit your skimmer and whatever other equipment you plan to use. The sump also needs to have enough volume to handle however much water will drain down when your pump is off (maintenance, power outage, etc.). If you plan to use your return pump as you...

Re: NEW TO HOBBY

There are a lot of methods of thought here. Are you planning to run a sump of some sort? If so, I would recommend investing in a decent protein skimmer, Reef Octopus and ASM both make affordable skimmers for tanks that size. Don't cut corners on your skimmer, get something good or you will be upgrad...

Re: NEW TO HOBBY

Welcome to the hobby. Where to start depends on what you plan to keep, a fish only tank requires much different equipment than a reef tank with corals. Decide what your livestock goals are first, generally a reef tank is more demanding, time consuming and expensive than fish only or live rock. Let u...

I was able to keep most of my livestock alive during over 6 weeks of no power after Katrina. I would run the pumps periodically via the generator and also use a gallon pitcher to aerate during down time. Most of my nicer corals died, I assume lack of light and temp swings. My leathers and hardier pi...

$750 sounds high if thats just the tank. I payed about $350 for my 150g about 5 yrs ago, that included having 2 holes drilled and a corner overflow.

I'd go to a glass shop. That way you can just bring the tank in and assure a good fit. 1/4" glass should be cheap, though 10g tanks are even thinner I think.
