New lights!

Post by Scott »

I have been accumulating equipment for the new tank for a while now and finally got enough together and enough time to test some of it I got 2 400 watt MH ballasts used online and a couple of Iwasaki 6500k bulbs. I had to put the ballasts in one enclosure and wire them with switches. I still have a lot to do and get but when I got these together and they worked, it was like a weight off my shoulders. Now all I have to do is get the tank drilled, build and stain a canopy, get a sump, return pump, skimmer pump, blah, blah, blah. Well it doesn't sound like too much now, but at least it is finished.

Man, I hope so. I kind of planned it this way so that I wouldn't have to upgrade when I get the next tank. Also they were so reasonably prices that I couldn't pass it up. I got 2 400w ballast 2 Iwasaki bulbs that were used for 6 months for $130. I had to buy a couple of switches and some mogul sockets for a grand total of $150.

Just for laughs I installed one 400w on my 55 gallon. Holy %$#@ is that thing bright. I only left it on for about 15 minutes this time and will graduate up from there to acclimate my corals to the new lights. When I find my camera I will take some pics with and without.

That is some seriously bright light. Just curious , but what are you doing for water movement on the new tank? Any sort of wave motion, or closed loop?

Update.

Post by Scott »

I have been running the single 400w on my 55 gallon for about 5 days now. It only runs about 30 minutes at a time 4 times a day. I have since noticed that my tricolor acro frag that had turned brown and pretty much stopped growing under the 330 watts of VHO has started to color again. When I got it it was a brown with about 1/8" of purple and a margin of green at the axial corallite. Now it is brown and has a blue tip that extends about 1/4" on some of the branches. I don't think the picture really shows the color too well. Man I can't wait to set the 100 gallon up.

thats awsome, ive noticed that acros will turn brown when introduced to the aquarium, but with proper lighting and water parameters, they color back up.
