Carpet Anemone / Brown Plate Coral / Purple THingy?

Post by Brandon »

Need help on this one:
Was marked as Brown Disk (Correction, they said disk, not plate) Coral, but they were not clear on the id of it.
It looks sort of like a Carpet Anemone, but dang-if-I-Know. It is about 3" in diameter.

Can someone help me with what it is? And what sort of light this fellow would like?

I'm not very experienced with the ID'ing of corals yet, but based on my limited experience, I'm agreeing with you, I think it's a carpet anemone. Good color!

Calcerous base and outer edges, you can see the color differences on the outside, with a meaty center. I did find a few that look similar , both lobophyllia and symphyllia. It is just the color that is throwing me off, never seen a brain this color, and with a large open central valley.
Is a carpet anemone soft tissued ? Never touched one, so I have no idea.

Doesn't lool like an anemone to me...they are fleshy all over...no calcium skeleton at all. I would sam eithre a large brain or something similar. Maybe a yet undescribed species.
