I bought the $31 FB off of eBay. I can't take the top off! :x The sand material inside is preloaded and the top is glued... So I have about a 1/4" hole to try to get the sand out and the carbon or ferric hydroxide in. :? Look on the bright side... it won't leak!

Ouch.. Well that sucks!
Wonder if you could retrofit a cap of some sort maybe use a neoprene washer or an o-ring to seal it?

Yep... it's sealed for good. I plan on pain sakenly pulling the sand out and inserting carbon 1 granule at a time.

Man, that sucks. I would have thought that they would have screw on lids or a port to change out the media. Can you drill a 3/8-1/2 inch hole in the top and tap it so that you can screw in a threaded plug?

I'm going to wait and see how 'painful' it is to use this little hole. Then I'll start drilling and messing it up.

For $31 what did I expect? :?

I can still get Ferric Hydroxide... there is a minimum order though, so check out this thread: http://www.mbrk.com/viewtopic.php?t=1130

By the way... the Ferric Hydroxide fit nicely in the fluidized bed and so did the granular activated carbon! Not bad for a cheap system.
