DIY H.O.B. Nano Refuge

Post by danielmiller82 »

This is the H.O.B. refuge project for my 18g tall.

I bought an Aqua Clear 500(now called 110) from marine depot for about $40. I removed the filter media tray, and made a divider out of some thick plastic. I used the bottom of the filter tray as a screen to keep any macro from falling into the tank. It will be getting a clamp on light soon.
Is contains 2 1/2 lbs of Keys LS and 3/4 LR as well as an assortment of macro(at least 4 kinds) its rated to move about 500gph and hasn't seemed to raise the water temp at all since it has been installed(in fact it has remained closer to 78 more than it used to before adding it). It adds a good bit of water flow into the tank and a fun place for my clown and damsel to play. The wrasse even seems to have fun picking off 'pods(i guess thats what hes been chasing) that flow out of the fuge.

Here are the Pics...

Looking good!

I actually have ended up using the filters and carbon on my nano at work... the pads help catch the stuff I scrub off the walls... but I love what you've done with the aquaclear!!

did you cut down the impeller blades i have heard that a few people on rc have cut them down or put the next size down of the aquaclear filters to slow down the flow
