Time to take care of my tank

Post by acpoweradapter »

I've been in college for the last 2 years and have left my tank (28gal JBJ HQI) at home for my parents to take care of. My dad enjoys the hobby but he doesn't know very much about it. He knows how to top off the water, feed the fish, use the pumps and reefkeeper, and do some water tests. The water has not been changed in about a year.

The livestock is a 6-line wrasse, a coral banded shrimp, and inverts: 2 margarita snails, 5 nassarius snails, about 10 arms of frogspawn, and many many many starfish. It is pretty healthy right now, but it could be better, there is a fair amount of algae on the rocks and sand. I'm not really sure where to get started right now.

I know I need to do a water change, and I need a new pump for my top-off water. But where should I go next? I think i need more snails but I'm not sure what to get. I'll post some pics when I get my camera charged.

Scrape off the algae, do a water change and check water chemistry. Get a calcium 2 part supplement and dose weekly
