A Sand question

Post by HCJohn »

Im looking to move from my 28 gallon tank to a 50gallon tank. Im just going to end up transfering all of my stuff over eventually. Anyway, the thing Im wondering is how I should do the sand. Lets just say for now that Im ordering some live sand from ebay...this may or may not happen...Anyway, would I put the new sand on top or on bottom? Im thinking it would probably be best on top for a few reasons...cleaner for one, and the fact that the nitrifying (spelling) bacteria in my old bed would probably be better at the bottom as well.

Im just looking for opinions or facts if anyone has them.

Any new sand should be added on top. However, you shouldn't add much more than 1/2 inch at a time. The animals present in the sand are resilient, but I don't like to test that, myself. You may end up suffocating more organisms otherwise. But all said, that should work out fine. What kind of live sand are you ordering--live sand (i.e. in a bag like CaribSea) or LIVE sand (sand direct from the ocean with all sorts of worms, etc. in it)?

Im thinking about ordering some of this.

For the price Im not sure I can beat it. I cant seem to find non-live sand for less.

Wow, that's not bad at all. Well, if they stand by their product (which it looks like they do), then go for it. They sound pretty good about quality, returns/satisfaction, etc. No experience with them myself, though.

For $27 including shipping, I ordered 30lbs just to check it out myself.

I will let you know.

If you feel like making the drive Coral Connection in Kenner has live sand $1/lb. right now with a 50lb minimum. If you would rather see what you are getting. Last time I bought LR there, it was $5/lb for some really prime looking stuff if you need that as well.

When I first set this tank up a few years ago I got all of my sand, rock and such from them. I really hate that drive, but might do it if need be.

Or he's just slow. At least he communicated with you, I never heard a thing after a bunch of emails.

Still hoping this will be a good deal so I can change my attitude. :D

He's replied to my communications and has good feedback. He claims to ship every Monday and offered to ship earlier if I needed him to.

With dead sand being $1/1.25/lb. locally I think its still worth looking in to.
