This is WILD!!!! This is like looking at something prehistoric, only it happened just a short while ago. It's like one of those doomsday movies...only real......whoa....

Wow, and it just keeps going forever. I thought there was only going to be a few pages.

Just like Andy would not let Barney carry a loaded gun.... We humans are too stupid to have that much destructive power within our so called control.

I think Einstein said our "technology has surpassed our humanity?" What a great time to be alive!

She has redone the site but check out the journal then click on "ghost town", better than other stuff this week on the web. Also the high res pics and video are good.

She and her story were featured on either History or Discovery a while back. It was disturbing to see the children with birth defects due to the accident. And the old people that have cancer. They say the ground 10ft off the roadway is still to hot to support life, but the roads are passable ... Just don't stop.

there is also a debate as to some of the information in her story is considered fabricated.
I am based in Kyiv and writing a book about Chornobyl for the Joseph Henry Press. Several sources have sent me links to the "Ghost Town" photo essay included in the last e-POSHTA mailing. Though it was full of factual errors, I did find the notion of lone young woman riding her motorcycle through the evacuated Zone of Alienation to be intriguing and asked about it when I visited there two days ago.

I am sorry to report that much of Elena's story is not true. She did not travel around the zone by herself on a motorcycle. Motorcycles are banned in the zone, as is wandering around alone, without an escort from the zone administration. She made one trip there with her husband and a friend. They traveled in a Chornobyl car that picked them up in Kyiv.

She did, however, bring a motorcycle helmet. They organized their trip through a Kyiv travel agency and the administration of the Chornobyl zone (and not her father). They were given the same standard excursion that most Chernobyl tourists receive. When the Web site appeared, Zone Administration personnel were in an uproar over who approved a motorcycle trip in the zone. When it turned out that the motorcycle story was an invention, they were even less pleased about this fantasy Web site.

Because of those problems, Elena and her husband have changed the Web site and the story considerably in the last few days. Earlier versions of the narrative lied more blatantly about Elena taking lone motorcycle trips in the zone. That has been changed to merely suggest that she does so, which is still misleading.

I would not normally bother to correct someone's silly Chornobyl fantasy. Indeed, correcting all the factual errors and falsehoods in "Ghost Town" would consume as much space as the Web site itself. But the motorcycle story was such an outrageous fiction that I thought the readers of e-Poshta should know.

I think the main point of the post was to explorer the damage to that region and how it is still in such bad shape with little hope for the future.

However the story was told and by whom is irrelevant. Discrediting those that told the story doesn't change the fact that those poor people are screwed now and for generations to come.

I'm not trying to flame you, I just don't understand why that was necessary.

Yes I was having a perfectly good fantasy about a chick riding on a motorcycle alone through a barren wasteland....possibly horny and you just killed it...thanks !!

On a side note how about an MBRK field trip there, kind of like we did a few years ago to Ocea ?

Excellent, very excellent website. I wish more people would look at things like this. It did happen, it can happen and just because it's "over there" doesn't make it any less for us. Just thinking about it brings back alot of memories.

I was working at a Radioactive waste reduction facility in Oak Ridge at the time. I remember they tried to send one of the doctors at REAC/TS to help the injured, and had ships very nearby begging the Russians to let them help. They weren't allowed. Those people suffered horribly with nothing for pain. It's ugly what acute levels do to a body.

The sad thing is, even if in 400 plus years the contamination/radiation gives out, one has to wonder if the genetic changes the animals/plants....and humans have gone thru won't be somehow permanent.

Thanks for posting the link to this site.
