120g Buildup

Post by Phisher »

My pumps and stand are coming in next weekend so I thought I would start a build log beginging with the stand.

48.5"x24.5" top and bottom bracing.

Takes some shape.

Triple braced uprisers, this cat will be strong.

Finished frame.

I hope to get the skin on tomorrow.

I have not made much progress this week. I want to get the tank here before I skin the stand so just did some more bracing and put the flooring in under the stand.

I did get my first basket of goodies in today.

My pumps, awesome price on plumbing fittings through work and found this berlin skimmer for $40 until I can afford a real good one. Tank should be here Saturday, very excited.

Hey, nothing wrong with a Berlin skimmer if/when you can get it adjusted right. I had one for about a year and liked it, got plenty of nasty thick skimmate without overskimming.
Good looking frame! What are you gonna skin it with?

I'm hoping to skin it this weekend. 1/4" pine all around, dressed up with 1x6 around the top and bottom, maybe some corner molding. I'm not a real craftsman so just playing it by ear.

My plumbing parts are from Hughes Supply, we do a lot of business with them at work so I get a good price buying through work.
The pumps I got locally, my local guy matches or beats online prices on special order items.
1" ball valves were like $3.50 and unions were $3.29 for sch80.

If you look on the Baton Rouge reef club on Yahoo groups someone there has a Lifereef skimmer for a good price. Everything looks good. I like the Gen-X pumps but some are loud. If you use 1" or even better yet 1.5" returns the noise is decreased and the flow increases.
Wanted: to set up a tank again.

Scott both are being plumbed with 1" in 3/4" out. I am concerned about the noise all around. I'm planning to use dimmer switchs in my fans to reduce noise, I think the pump noise is alot on how you mount them so I will need to come up with something creative there.

Just use an adapter (bushing) from 3/4 to 1 or larger. The increased pipe diameter reduces head pressure. Figure that:

.75 inch pipe area is ~ .441 sq inches
1 inch pipe area is ~ 0.785 sq inches
1.5 inch pipe area is ~ 1.767 sp inches

So it would take almost 2 .75 inch pipes to equal one 1 inch. Plus you have less head due to friction.
