Buying a Sun Conure...

Post by danielmiller82 »

I am looking to buy a Sun Conure in the next couple of months. Do any of you have a med sized bird cage laying around? I am looking for something about 2' x 2' and about 30-36" tall minimum with 3/4"-1" gaps between bars. I found one in town that is really nice and they want $200 for it. Not a bad price, but I'm looking for something a little cheaper. Also, if any of you know of good breeders for Sun Conures let me know.

Thanks

Daniel, You know anyone that has a sun conure? Ever been around them for a while?

If you know about conures, then that's cool, otherwise..

You do know the sound they make, right?

And really, for a bird that size, you'll want something a little bigger than that....look on ebay for a parrot cage, I got a big ass one for my Quaker for 150 bucks, WITH shipping.

Seriously, look into conures before you make the decision to buy one. They are not quiet birds. If you want a bird that talks there's others out there that do not make the screeching sound that Conure's make.

PM me.....

I reread my post and it sounded like I was being an Ass.. that's not how I meant it, just meant, they have a certain uhm sound that I personally can't take, and they are rather vocal. I can't stomach lovebirds for the same reason. Just a real high pitched call. If you don't find their call objectionable, they are cute and very active little clowns :

I know about Conures...and I have a friend who has had a few of them and was successful to almost completely rid them of the obnoxious screaming, and if they are fully hand weaned, they will have much less of a chance to be a screamer(most screamers are from big bird farms). As long as you give them attention... they will be fairly quiet. Besides, a conures snuggly personality makes up for the screaming. I would really prefer a Cockatoo, but the price for one is about 3 times as much. I know that cage is a bit on the small side, Thats why I said thats the minimum size I'm looking for.

Now if anyone knows where I can get a fully hand weaned Sulfur Crested or Umbrella for less than $700 I am ALL EARS!!!!!!!

Daniel,

Me either :) We have 4 parrots and they're all very loud. I have a friend who has a conure and have been around them many times....As Brandon said, not trying to be an ass, but it's a big commitment.

Conures live 20-25 years. :)

I cannot stand the sound a Lovebird makes for very long. Actually the only bird that did not drive me nuts with high pitched shrills was a Macaw(sp), it just rambled all day.

Actually, birds that have been hand fed scream a lot too :) Doesn't matter what breed, age, color, size anything :)

Really the big thing on "making" them not scream is to not react to it (a lesson *I* need to learn!) Kinda like when kids cry :)

I have a co-worker that has one that was used for a quaker, it's in good condition and she'll take 100 for it... you can email her at dragonofthedesert AT hotmail.com , she's located in Robertsdale, if you're interested, email her and she can email you some pics.

You can get a decent sized one for a Conure at the SACBS show in Mobile (South Alabama Caged Bird Society - who incidentally are a club for the aviculturist) for pretty cheap. AND toys. AND food.
