My favorite snail

Post by danielmiller82 »

I never bought this snail...it just showed up one day about 1/4 inch and started growing to its current size a little smaller than 1 inch. He was actually on the glass Here is an extreme closeup of him.... notice his leopard spots.... and the reflection of the lens in the glass. Does anyone know what kind of snail this is???

It's a whelk. Have you noticed a diminishing population in your snails lately?

I'm not Dr. Shimek, so I don't know if that is the carnivorous preying type or not from the picture. Might post it in the id section on reefcentral to get him to identify it for you.

Nassarius is on the left, and whelk is on the right

no snails dead except for the occasional one that falls over and gets eaten by the hermits. had him for quite a while now. I think you are correct in IDing it as a whelk.
