Re: algae taking over

Specifically, what is your Nitrate level? Reason I ask, is that I have had a green hair algae problem for the past year or so, and I think I am now going in the right direction. The first test kit that I had gave a very general level (in increments of like 5 or 10 ppm), and I think it gave me a fals...

Re: keeping parameter in check!

I am fairly new to the hobby and am trying to develop a system to keep my parameters in check. Also, I am trying to figure out which parameters I need to watch closely and which ones I can mostly ignore. I am finding a lot of conflicting information on what the parameters SHOULD BE. Presumably every...

Re: Canopy lighting for reef tank

Thank you for your opinion/advice. Is there a potential problem of putting halides in a canopy and the heat getting too much...or is that just my misconception? Regardless of the type of lighting, any particular combination of colors (i.e. - actinic, 10K, 12K, 14K, 20K, etc.) work best? I have to sa...

Canopy lighting for reef tank

Looking for suggestions - I have a 100 gal (60 x 18 x 20) tank that was setup for freshwater, but I am thinking about setting it up as a reef tank. The biggest concern that I have is lighting. I want to mount the lighting in the wooden canopy that matches the stand. What type of lighting (MH, LED, T...

Re: Light cycle?

I have 1 soft coral (not sure what type, maybe leather?), some green and brown polyps, some zoas, and a purple mushroom. Reason I ask, I am fighting a red cyanobacteria problem that has just about wiped out my zoas. I tried the anti-bacterial/chemical way, but immediately recognized that it was a tr...

Light cycle?

I have a 29 gal with power compact lighting, 65w actinic and 65w 10K lights. Right now, I run the actinic for 13 hrs and the the 10K for 4 hrs per day. How many hours per day should I run each? What does everybody else do?

Re: Can't keep snails alive

How about my pH and Alkalinity. I just retested and my pH is barely 8.0 and my Alkalinity is more like 125 ppm. Should I do something to raise these a little? Since the previous post I have tried some more turbos...did fine for about a week or two and then they all wilted away...just fell off the ro...

Pirate Latitudes

Since no one has posted anything to this forum in over three years, I felt compeled to share about my new favorite book. It is called "Pirate Latitudes". It was written by Michael Crichton, but published posthumously in 2009. I think Michael Crichton really did his homework and wrote a fic...

Can't keep snails alive

I setup my tank last November, and I can NOT keep Astraea/Nassarius/Turbo snails alive! I recently bought 8 Astraea snails and was very cautious with the acclimation, but within a couple of weeks all were lost! I have FOWLR, except for a couple of small anemones (mostly aiptasia), a fire shrimp, and...

I get RO, but why DI?

I understand why RO water is great, because it removes sediment, chlorine, flouride, phosphates, organics, etc...I get that. Why is deionized water so important for saltwater aquariums? The deionization process removes mineral ions such as sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc. All of...

Re: Good thing or bad thing?

Update: I have 2 of them. They are each about 3 to 4 inches long. Does anyone know if they are the stinging type? Thanks.

Good thing or bad thing?

My tank is two weeks old and this thing crawled out of the rock last night. It never fully came out of the rock, but about 2 inches of it was showing. I think this is some type of bristle worm (?). Do all bristle worms have the ability to sting? I have read some mixed reviews, should I keep it? Shou...

Need Crab ID

I have had several types of FW aquariums in the past, but I have finally setup my first SW tank. When I added my live rock, a crab hitchhiked along. I need some help with identification. He seems to favor the night time. He is about 2 inches wide. Pictures are attached. Thanks.
