Lower nutrient load and increase PH. Higher PH retards algae growth. Guess I've just been lucky, but I have yet to have any hair algae after a couple of years.

raising the pH (~8.3-8.45) is a good idea. Also, make sure calcium and alk are at higher levels. the ph being higher ensures that CO2 cant be dissolved in solution for long, thus starving algae (to an extent)

Refuge is the way to go.

Did I mention that I have one up for sale soon? Check Forsale board.
