I may be ordering carbon in bulk (>100lbs) soon, so if anyone is interested, let me know and I can part out plenty. I don't know if I am for sure, yet, though. I will let whomever is interested know if/when I make the purchase.

Alright, I found a supplier that would ship it to me in reasonable quantities (no way am I buying a ton--literally 2000 lbs minimum). This company, General Carbon (generalcarbon.com) ships in 55 lb quantities. Whoever is interested can do it in a group buy or you can get it directly from me. It is ~$83 ($82.95) per 55 lb bag, plus shipping charges, which adds up to barely over $2.00 per pound (if you include shipping). I will probably get just one bag, maybe two if there is enough demand.

Just FYI Krazyplace had done much carbon research in the past and did a bulk order, you might want to ask him about where he ordered from.

Thanks. My source's numbers are about the same, but I was looking for a good source of GFH. I assume Krazyplace got it from USFilters? If so, they are selling it for arsenic removal. They haven't made any alterations to the standard stuff, have they?

Try sending him a PM, I am not sure how often he frequents the board since he moved.

I'd even be interested in getting 10lbs from you if we could figure a way for me to pick it up on one of (what have become) my monthly casino runs.

Doc, do you have a phosphate test kit? We buy GAC in bulk for our remediation systems (for both vapor and liquid phase treatment). I've snaged a little and have always wanted to test it for phosphate leaching. One of our sites uses 20,000lbs of GAC to treat vapor phase gasoline contaminants that we suck out of the ground!

Sure do Griff. I'm pretty sure that all my PO4 is locked up in the HA. Only found a detectable amount once. Every time I test it it's zero. I added a 10 gallon plant tank off the sump and have just add ulva, C. Proligera, C. Floridans, and Red Gracillia. Chaeto is also growing well in the sump. With luck, it will gradually out compete the HA for nutrients.

If I can. I'd rather take care of the HA problem naturally. I tried a container of Phosban but it has hardly touched it.

Well, I contacted USFilters and they no longer bother with aquarium applications :( .

Yep... it wasn't an 'aquarium grade' carbon per se. They make a large selection of the stuff. I simply matched the specification for one of the aquarium grade resellers to the specification for one of USFilters' GAC. It was rumored that the resellers bought it from USFilters.
