How long can fish go without food?

Post by GermanShepherdGirl »

What's the longest amount of time you will go out of town without having someone stop by and feed your fish?

For Thanksgiving I was out of town for about 5 days at my husbands grandparents house and had my brother go to my house to feed my dogs and fish. But when we go to my father-in-laws in about a month we are bringing the dogs with us. We usually only go up there for a long weekend. Should I have someone come by to feed my fish or do you think they will survive 3-4 days without food?

They will be fine, unless you have any anthelia in there. I've gone longer than that without feeding my fish on a regular basis.

My fish are lucky if they get fed once a week, so I sincerely doubt yours will have a problem for 5 days (depending upon which fish you have). Most can go for 10-14 days before death by starvation occurs.

Same here, I have went two weeks before. I am notorious for forgetting to feed my fish.

No, I feed mine every day. They complain too much if I don't. :D

I used to feed my fish 2 or 3 times a day....now I've cut it back to just once a day.

I guess my fish are spoiled compared to most. Although since I started this post I haven't fed my fish in about 2 days. I have a Yasha Hashe Goby that I've had for many months that used to rarely come out. Well since he hasn't eaten in a couple of days he started coming out of his little hole last night. I just sat there in amazement! I think I'll start feeding my fish less often from now on! Now if my Randal Shrimp would come out more often I'd be happy! I never see the damn thing....only once in a blue moon.
