Question about powerheads

Post by ladyofthedeep »

Is there a reasonable way to clean coraline algae off of my powerheads? I have a couple of 1200 maxijets and their function has decreased. Thouht that this might help their performance. Thanks, Carol

you can soak the in a vinegar solution and that will disolve or break up the coraline algae. i usually put them in a bucket with vinegar water and let them run for awhile

Straight white vinegar (actually only 5%) works the fastest and is perfectly safe for the pumps. I use a 5% hydrochloric acid solution to clean my stuff, but that is mostly because I am impatient. I don't recommend using it unless you are experienced with using strong acids--mainly because it can be dangerous to you and it corrodes steel when left in solution for too long. Works great otherwise, though  .
